interconnected

"interconnected" is my graduation short film for the dual apprenticeship as media designer for image and sound. The project examines current communication habits through a fictional narrative and combines scenic direction with illustrative elements and motion design.

Context & Objectives

• Task: Develop a self-contained short film as the graduation project of the media design apprenticeship.
• Training context: Graduation work of the four-year training programme at Infected Postproduction GmbH (Markenfilm).
• Theme: A critical look at modern communication and the paradox of permanent connectivity without real interaction.

Narrative Summary

Protagonist Akim guides the audience through the historical development of communication in a sober tone, yet fails to reach people absorbed in their smartphones. The story shows that knowledge about communication is not enough when we remain socially offline.

Design & Production Process

• Development of hand-drawn illustrations forming the basis for the film's motion graphics language.
• Transfer of the drawings into Adobe Illustrator for clean vectors and layout refinement.
• Animation and compositing in Adobe After Effects to merge graphics with filmed footage.
• Picture editing in Adobe Premiere Pro; final grading and colour matching in DaVinci Resolve for a consistent look.

Results & Learnings

• Delivery of the final film as graduation project with a coherent interplay of narration, animation and cinematography.
• Positive feedback from the mentors for conceptual clarity and the integration of illustration into live-action film.
• Deepened interdisciplinary workflows across preproduction design, set direction and post-production.
• Career milestone: An important professional step as the starting point of my career in media design.
